Structure & membership

We are a non-profit co-operative with a radically non-hierarchical structure. Our "directors" and "officers" have no powers beyond being individual members of the co-op who participate in consensus decisions. The right to apply for membership is open to anyone who agrees with our vision statement, accepts the responsibilities involved, and agrees to purchase $7000 worth of membership shares. Final acceptance as a Debbie member takes considerable time and is dependant on the agreement of all current members. Members can only apply for a permanent living space on the land as space become available.

Generally, members are expected to commit money, time and effort, and to be responsive to the needs of others. However, it is understood that the amount and kind of contributions we can each make will vary at different times. It is the intangible things such as intent and generousity, rather than money and hours of labour, that are the measure of our participation.

Our programs and gatherings are open to everyone who shares our vision. If you're not ready to become a member, you can become a "soul friend" and participate in much of the planning and activities. Our soul friends are encouraged to support the community in whatever ways they can -- they might help plant gardens; help with running workshops or offer workshops themselves; contribute skills, labour, money or equipment; and they are encouraged to purchase one or more $1000 shares in the co-operative. To some extent, the benefits of being a soul friend vary with each individual and will be roughly proportional to participation and contributions.
