solstices
and
equinoxes
drumming at fall equinox -- Heinz, Doug, Kelly, Janet, Sabina, Theresa, Alena Four times a year, on the Solstices and Equinoxes, we gather to perform ceremonies, to discuss developments and plans, to share stories and food and music, to renew our spirit. Although some of us still have a somewhat nomadic lifestyle, we do all try to be present for an open gathering at Summer Solstice. Send us an email if you're interested in taking part.

Geshe Gendün Yonten A Geshe is a Tibetan monk who has acquired a great knowledge of Buddhist philosophy -- typically after 16 to 18 years of study and practice -- and has passed severe examinations in front of hundreds of other monks and Lamas. This training entitles a Geshe to be a perfect teacher of Dharma.

In November 2003 Spirit Dance Community was privileged to host Geshe Larampa Gendün Yonten and to facilitate the beginning of a cultural and spiritual exchange between the Tibetans and the First Nations peoples of the Cariboo Chilcotin.

Geshe Yonten met with several Shuswap, Carrier and Chilcotin First Nations people during his visit. Shuswap Medicine Man Percy Rosette performed a powerful and moving smudge ceremony for the Geshe
Medicine Ways and, with his daughter and son-in-law, drummed and sang several traditional songs.

In July 2004 Geshe Yonten returned with Lama Lobsang from India and with several other Tibetan Buddhist lamas. They created a sand mandala -- a special ceremonial earth-healing event -- in conjunction with several First Nations earth-healing ceremonies. This became the first "Medicine Ways" gathering, hosted by The Spirit Dance Centre for Spiritual Ecology.  See Medicine Ways: Earth Healing Ceremonies with Tibetans and First Nations.
